What is Cardamom?

What is Cardamom?

Cardamom - you may have seen them on the shelf at the grocery store.  Little green pods stuffed in a jar.  What are they?  What do I do with them?  Where do they come from?

Cardamom refers to several plants in the ginger family.

How they Grow:

They grow on tentacles at the base of the plant.  The pods are dried and can be used whole, ground or only the seeds inside the pod.

Where Do they Come From?

Primarily they are grown in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Malaysia.

How Do I Use Them?

Add the pods when making simple syrup to give it a citrusy spice kick.  Grind and add to baked goods like scones, muffins or cookies.  Add to tea when steeping for added flavor.

Cardamom is one of the most expensive spices by weight, but a little goes a long way!  Freshly grinding ensures optimal flavor.  If you prefer it ground, check it out here.
